When you step into the Spare Room Bowling Lanes, the turquoise interior, the retro décor, including a working jukebox, and the glistening original wood lanes greet your eyes at once and incite a feeling of pure delight! This heritage building, built in the late 1940s, was originally an automobile dealership. The original owner, Mr. Joe Perkins, collaborated with architect, A.L. Radbourne, to design a five-pin bowling alley on the second floor
With the presence of the upper floor wall of windows, the natural light makes it a cheerful place to play during the day, and with the black lights that can be turned on at night depending on the occasion, it can feel like a groovy disco environment!
Angie Beaupre and her husband Blake have been the owners of the Spare Room Bowling Lanes since 2022.
The previous owners wanted to ensure that whoever took over the business would uphold the family-friendly environment. Angie and Blake were a local family whose values for wholesome fun for everyone resonated with the values of the previous owners, and so, they were the perfect candidates to continue the tradition. In addition to their family values, Angie and Blake hold the values of community and charitable work near to their hearts. Angie is heavily involved with the charitable organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County. The “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” that is in it’s 46th year will be held at the Spare Room, and its through events such as these that Angie’s two worlds collide harmoniously.
Angie and Blake’s mission is to remain family friendly for everyone from all walks of life while maintaining an authentic and original atmosphere. They noted that when customers come to bowl, they are always in good spirits playing for the sake of recreational fun, and they adore taking in the nostalgic ambience of the bowling lanes. Everyone leaves with wonderful memories and smiles on their faces.
It is important for Angie and Blake to ensure their clientele are always happy with their experience. When it comes to hosting events, they are flexible to try and meet the needs of the group booking. The facility rental is offered at a discounted rate of $250/hr and with that rental, customers can bring their own food as long as they discuss details with the staff prior to arriving. They are open to collaborating with patrons to discuss how to make their requests come to fruition to ensure everyone has a wonderful time.
The main focus of the sport is for recreational fun. There can be up to five players per lane and lanes are rented by the hour. As of right now, there are no competitive, strict leagues; however, that said, if there are groups who wish to start a league, they are more than welcome to chat with Angie and Blake! There are currently a few groups who come by on Wednesday nights, and they will happily accept newcomers to join.
On Wednesdays from 10:00 am-2:00pm, there is a seniors’ 25% off- discount and on Wednesday nights, it costs $15 to bowl three games with the league. Wednesday nights are ideal for teams in leagues, and Angie and Blake would like to rebuild the leagues back in town that existed prior to the pandemic.
In terms of refreshments, you can order pizza through the canteen to arrive when you come off the lanes, or you can munch away on chips, nachos or popcorn, or you can indulge in some of the best jumbo hotdogs in town while you play! If you have a sweet tooth, you can enjoy a good old fashioned root beer float, a slushie, or choose a treat from their candy concessions galore! The canteen is fully licensed and has a selection of pop, beer, mixed drinks and coolers from which to choose.
While they don’t allow outdoor shoes, you can bring your own clean, indoor, non-marking runners. Prices are inclusive of HST.
By virtue of its location being situated in a heritage building, it is located on the second floor with stairs at the entrance. There are two municipal parking lots within walking distance (two blocks away).
If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind venue that can hold up to 85 people and keep them entertained for hours on end, check out the group party and/or facility rental at $250/hr to rent to tailor the fun to your group.
