Perth Commemorates the 175th
Anniversary Join the Town of Perth, 175 years later as they re-enact the famous story of The Last Fatal Duel in Upper Canada. On Friday, June 13th, 2008 at 12:45 PM the Town of Perth's Heritage Management Committee will stop traffic on Gore Street just outside of the Perth Museum (located at 11 Gore Street East) to dramatize this famous duel. Perth's Town Crier, Brent McLaren, will host the 15 minute performance as downtown workers, merchants, tourists, students, and guests witness the event.
An earlier re-enactment will take place at Inge-Va (located at 66 Craig Street) at 10:00 AM for school children and the public. Susan Code will lead an historical walking tour of Perth at 11:00 AM highlighting notable locations throughout Perth including the Old Burying Ground where Robert Lyon is buried. The walking tour will leave the Perth Museum at 11:00 AM and will return in time for the main street re-enactment. This celebrated duel was a matter of honor, the result of a quarrel between John Wilson and Robert Lyon over a young lady, Elizabeth Hughes. Following the Dueling Code, Lyon and Wilson each met with pistols on June 13, 1833 in a field just beyond the town line of Perth on the banks of the Tay River. The first shots missed and as no settlement could be reached the pistols were reloaded and positions were once again taken. The second round produced the fatal result: Mr. Lyon was shot through the heart, dying shortly thereafter, and thus creating another page of Perth’s history. Business of the Month
The Membership committee has decided that they
would like to have a featured business in each
of the Chamber’s monthly newsletters. A
business will be randomly picked each month
and highlighted in the newsletter. This month
the Business of the Month is Explore Perth
After they were married in 2001, owners Tyler and Chantal Patton realized the need for an on-line local business directory for the Perth area. With more households owning computers and people around the world surfing the internet, this venture would be a success. In 2002, the site www.exploreperth.com was launched and it was everything the Pattons believed it would be and more. With hits to the site from 150 countries around the world, www.exploreperth.com is a venture any business person would be proud of creating. All the traffic to the site resulted in the Pattons expanding it to include videos, discussion groups, question/answer area (thanks to the help of Madeline) and more. Check them out online at www.exploreperth.com. If you are thinking marketing your business online would benefit you, TCP will be able to assist. They work with businesses to create websites that are a true extension of the client's company and personality. If you would like to see what TCP can do for you, contact them at info@tcpglobalsolutions.com or visit online at www.tcpglobalsolutions.com Members’ Corner
